The Sustainable Food Policy Alliance advocates for policies and practices that improve the quality and accessibility of information available to consumers about the food they purchase for themselves and their families.
As consumers ourselves, we know that food choices are highly personal. Each of us is looking for different information to guide our individual choices about what we eat and drink. Whether you value affordability, macronutrient content, certain ingredients, or specific production practices, we believe that people are entitled to clear and consistent information that accurately reflects the latest science and reliably informs their preferences. Members of the Sustainable Food Policy Alliance have made broad changes within our companies to improve transparency, but we also recognize there is more work to be done, which is why we are committed to:
- Exploring labeling transparency and education as tools to help people take control of their health and make educated decisions about what they consume for themselves and their families. This includes continuing to seek ways to improve and simplify food labels and other mechanisms to convey information.
- Continuing to strengthen voluntary, industry-wide standards governing responsible marketing and improving the nutrition of foods marketed to families and children. We hold ourselves to high ethical marketing standards and respect each parent or gatekeeper’s right to make smart decisions about their children’s health.
- We are confident that currently approved gene-based technologies for food production are safe. We also believe that as food companies, we play a critical role in improving the quality and accessibility of information available to consumers about how their food is made so that they can make the most informed decisions for themselves and their families.
